Surprises abound as minor parties flood the senate

THE expected election of Palmer United Party candidate Glenn "The Brick" Lazarus to the Senate will not be the only surprise awaiting the new Coalition Government.

Several of Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott's key promises, including the scrapping of the carbon tax, will rely on delicate negotiation with a diverse Senate.

Among the candidates that he may need to appease could be Pauline Hanson and the likely return of South Australian Senators Sarah Hanson-Young and Nick Xenophon.

There is also a chance a second PUP candidate and a Victorian Motoring Enthusiasts Party candidate could make it via complex preference deals.

However, the final make-up of the Senate will not be known for some time.
