Bay quilters are sew generous donating to police families

A GROUP of dedicated Hervey Bay women has spent countless hours painstakingly crafting quilts for children in need.

The homemade masterpieces will comfort children of Queensland police officers whose parents have passed away in the line of duty or who are stricken with illness.

Gail McIntosh, from Hervey Bay's Arts and Crafts Superstore, rallied her sewing group to create 22 quilts for the Police Legacy charity.

Ms McIntosh's daughter is a police officer, so the cause was close to her heart.

"The police just aren't appreciated enough and we wanted to do something to show that we care," she said.

"It was all about doing something for somebody else and letting these kids know they haven't been forgotten."

The brightly coloured quilts were presented to Hervey Bay police senior sergeant Dan Willett, who accepted them on behalf of the charity group.

"This is a huge thing they've done and a huge benefit to our Police Legacy," he said.

About 77 children are affiliated with Police Legacy, and the group was determined every child receive a quilt.

The group has already begun creating the next batch.
