IT'S a good thing Gympie masters athletes Karel McClintock and Sheril Buchanan didn't have to fly to and from the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast last week, as they would have exceeded the baggage limit on their way home.

The pair cleaned up a whopping 14 medals between them, including seven gold, in only three days of track and field events.

The bi-annual event started on November 3 and wraps up with a closing ceremony tomorrow night.

McClintock and Buchanan competed in the first three days of the competition.

In that time McClintock managed to take six gold medals, with first place in the hammer throw (27.10m), shot put (10.09m), javelin (21.80m), discus (23.95m) and throws pentathlon where she marked a personal best.

She also ran the 60m in 9.37 seconds to finish in fourth place and chalk up another personal best.

Buchanan put in a gold-medal performance in the 100m hurdles and took out silver in the 60m (8.56 seconds), 400m (64.66 seconds, a personal best), long jump (4.14m), triple jump (8.47m) and the high jump (1.30m).

Buchanan also claimed bronze for her personal best run of 13.79 seconds in the 100m and bronze in the 200m run.

While this was McClintock's sixth Pan Pacific Masters Games, it was Buchanan's debut at the competition.

Buchanan, who moved to Gympie from Emerald in March, said the experience was great and she already has her eye on up-coming competitions. She said the increased access to competition has spurred on her athletic ambitions.

Buchanan began training in Gympie with coach Russell Stratton not long after moving here and she still managed impress despite limited time for preparation for the Pan Pacific Masters Games.

McClintock's set of six gold medals is a attribute to 12 years of training along side Stratton.

Seeing she is a gold medallist in the throwing events, McClintock said she would up her training in order to take on more running events.

Having taken the Pan Pacifics Masters by storm, the pair has now set their long-term sights on a medal haul from the 2015 World Masters Athletics Championships.
