Second Ikea store approved for south-east Queensland

A HUGE Ikea superstore has been approved as part of the expansion of the Westfield North Lakes shopping centre near Caboolture.

The development approval for Westfield North Lakes includes 29 000m² gross lettable area for an Ikea showroom, eight cinemas and approximately 20 000m² gross lettable area for the shopping centre extension.

An additional 1,366 car parks will be provided on the site, taking the total of car parks to just over 5,000.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said Ikea was the right fit for one of the fastest growing regions in Australia.

"This will be only the second location for the world-famous home furnishings store in south-east Queensland," Mr Sutherland said.

"The addition of Ikea will help to cement North Lakes' as one of south-east Queensland's top shopping destinations."

Division 4 councillor Julie Greer said figures suggested the extension of Westfield North Lakes would create thousands of jobs for the region.

"This takes into account the jobs that will be directly generated through retail and construction, and those created as a result of the flow-on economy," Cr Greer said.

"With big-name shopping options, and the construction of The Corso at North Lakes now underway, there's a lot to be excited about in the Moreton Bay Region in 2013."

The showroom is double the proposed Costco warehouse approved by council in August which was legally challenged by Westfield for being too large.

The new centre is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
