Mr Ford: Les reaches 5000 sales not out

PROUD MOMENT: As he notches up his 5000th new and used Ford sale, Pacific Ford Maroochydore's Les Evangelista reflects on his success dating back to when Corsairs and Telstars were in the showroom.
PROUD MOMENT: As he notches up his 5000th new and used Ford sale, Pacific Ford Maroochydore's Les Evangelista reflects on his success dating back to when Corsairs and Telstars were in the showroom. Iain Curry

THERE'S a battered red A4 book titled "Deliveries" on Les Evangelista's desk with its first entry dated November 1992.

Nearly a quarter of a century later there's a highlighted line through entry number 5000, the exact number of new and used Ford cars this man with the ready smile has sold during his successful innings at Maroochydore's Pacific Ford.

Times have changed but Les's work ethics have not. "A smile costs nothing," he said. "It makes the customer happy. It's easy for me though because I enjoy my job, I love coming into work."

Les moved into the car trade after a work-related accident as a builder, and the Ford showroom back in '92 had him showing off the then-current Corsair, Telstar, Laser, Maverick and EB Falcon - not a small SUV, Ranger or Mustang in sight.

OLD SCHOOL: Ford Falcon EB was the latest and greatest when Les began on the sales floor at Pacific Ford Maroochydore.

"Back in those days you really had to build the client list up, knocking on doors if you had to, but these days people are more informed about the cars due to the internet," he said.

"What hasn't changed is the after-care and talking to people. I keep in touch with my customers as after-sales service is the most important thing. I've had a lot of regular and repeat business because of this."

On the subject of Ford's local manufacturing stopping, Les said he was sad to see it happen, especially Falcon and Territory, but pointed to the likes of Mustang and Ranger to show how good imported product could be.

Les said he was very proud of his 5000 sales, and his next goal was notching up 25 years of service for the Pacific Motor Group.
