Elective surgery time blow out at Hervey Bay Hospital

ONE in two patients are not being treated within the clinically recommended general surgery times at Hervey Bay Hospital.

New data on the Queensland Health website revealed that in September, just 56% of those on the common elective surgery waiting lists went into theatre within the suggested timeframe.

Geoff Dawson, director business and operational services with Fraser Coast Health Services, blamed increased patient numbers in winter for delays.

"General surgery was significantly impacted by the increase in medical patients during the winter months, leaving limited bed availability for surgical patients," Mr Dawson said.

"By the end of November, it is anticipated all long-wait category three general surgery patients will have been treated, and the service has arranged for an additional theatre list at Hervey Bay Hospital to treat other long-wait patients."

Other information released to the Chronicle showed a category one patient - the highest-need elective surgery classification the hospital has - as waiting double the clinically recommended time.

Category one patients should be seen within 30 days but for one ill person needing treatment that time frame could not be met.

"The longest wait for a category one patient is in urology," Mr Dawson said.

"One patient will have waited 82 days by the time of their surgery (which has been booked)."

Data on general surgery delay times at Maryborough Hospital revealed that in September, just 65% of patients on waiting lists were treated within the clinically recommended time.

October figures for Hervey Bay Hospital showed one in five patients needing urology surgery were not treated in the recommended time.
