THE region's finest young athletes were put to the test last weekend, as Caboolture Little Athletics braved the Regional Track and Field Championship at Centenary Lakes.

Seventy-four seven to 17 year-olds competed in 281 events on February 4-5.

And they broke a handful of records.

Joe Small broke the under 12 regional record for discus, with a throw of 35.62m.

He also broke the shotput record, with a throw of 11.59m.

Jack Lowrie broke the under 12 regional 800m record, with a time of 2.24.20.

He also broke the 1500m record, with a time of 4.56.70.

"It was a massive event.

"Our nominations did exceptionally well," Caboolture Little Athletics spokeswoman Bernadette Lowrie said.

More than half of Caboolture Athletics representatives were fortunate enough to place at state level.

"While we had a bit of rain on Saturday, we were lucky the weather was fine and cleared up the grounds.

"So the track was fantastic on Sunday," she said.

It was an exciting day for the younger athletes.

The under 7s and 8s all received participation medals for their efforts.

Club manager Ray Totoro praised the efforts of athletes and committee during the event.

"I've got to give a special mention to Shaun O'Hara and Anthony Vohland, our equipment officers," he said.

"They worked non-stop.

"We couldn't have done it without them."

Bernadette said the event was bigger and better than last year.

She hoped the 2012 Olympics would encourage more young athletes to sign on with the club.

"We are expecting a boost this year," she said.

Next up for Caboolture Little Athletics are the Queensland State Championships.

The championships will be held on March 23-25 at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre at Nathan.

"A lot will be training for it," Bernadette said.

"We will train on Monday and Wednesday nights to prepare for it.".
