Fire devastates Bribie family

FIRE has devastated the lives of a Bribie Island family after their old timber beach shack was engulfed in flames just after 8.30pm on Tuesday.

A series of loud explosions alerted neighbours to the drama.

Fire and Rescue units quickly responded to the emergency at the Sylvan Beach Esp home and fought for more than 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Neighbour Kimberley Milner said the whole incident happened very quickly.

"At first I heard a noise like whips cracking or fireworks going off and next thing the whole house was engulfed in flames," she said.

"It was pretty loud and I could see further explosions, which blew tiles off the roof."

All the residents of the house, believed to be a male in his 50s, his female partner and their young son, escaped the fire, although the man was taken to Caboolture Hospital with burns to his hands, while the woman was treated for smoke inhalation.

Forensic fire investigators were on the scene on Wednesday morning attempting to determine the cause of the fire.

In an act of compassion for her neighbours, Ms Milner has liaised with the Volunteer Marine Rescue to use their site as a collection point for people who wished to donate household items.

Donations can be made 9.30-10.30am and 3.30-4.30pm weekdays or 10-11am weekends until March 3.
