IF you were out and about on the beach at Woorim on Easter Sunday, you may have spotted a small team of environmental warriors spreading a message about how you can help take care of the planet.

The four families from the northern suburbs of Brisbane thought up the idea for the 52 Pick Up Challenge during a camping trip to Fraser Island in January.

Since then they've been on a mission to change people's attitude towards rubbish.

The idea is to pick up 52 pieces of rubbish when you're out and about, and share your findings with the challenge community online.

Co-founder Rohan Bell said they hope to reach as many people as they can to show them how easy and fun it can be to play your part in taking care of the environment.

"We all had a lot of fun when we first challenged each other and our kids were very receptive to it,” he said.

"We saw that people are receptive to the idea, especially children, so we thought 'let's get this going and take it out there and educate people about it'.

"The Bribie trip was really to test the waters and see if people engaged with it - to find out if there is support in the broader community for the idea to take off.”

They approached unsuspecting beach-goers, offered one of their specially designed bags and challenged them to collect their share of rubbish.

Co-founder Tamara Neill said the response was fantastic.

"Approaching people cold, usually they're are a bit standoffish but as soon as we began talking, people were receptive,” she said.

"It was heart-warming to hear people say they said they do it on their walks anyway - I think we also reached a bunch of people that don't do that and they said their kids loved it.”

"It's all about changing peoples mind set about the rubbish they see and teaching the kids so they can take that message on to future generations.”

You can order your own challenge bag and share your pictures.
