VINCE is not your ordinary dog.

The eight-year-old kelpie staffy cross protected his owner by fighting off a 1.8m eastern brown snake.

Owner Lexie Lewington said she could not be more happy to have her four-legged friend back in one piece, and praised the amazing work of veterinarians.

"I was riding my quad bike with Vince running beside me (on my property)," she said. "It leapt out biting Vince (but) he bravely fought off the eastern brown snake."

Ms Lewington said people needed to be vigilant and take precautions to protect their pets.

"Snake attacks are on the rise everywhere - pet owners need to keep their yards clean, use solar-powered snake repellent and build their pens off the ground," she said.

Doctor Joanne Hanssens of the Maranoa Veterinary Surgery said it had been a rapid start to the snake season.

"Eight dogs were presented with snakebite symptoms in the last three days from Saturday afternoon to Monday night at the Maranoa Veterinary Surgery," she said.

"Snake are just coming out of hibernation and it's quite severe.

"There are more snakes around compared to the last few years."
