CHANNEL 10 has renewed viewer favourite Offspring, but is it a good thing for fans?

Speculation has been rife for months that Ten might respond to calls to bring back the beloved quirky drama starring Gold Logie winner Asher Keddie as Melbourne obstetrician Nina Proudman.

All good things must come to an end eventually, right?

Now that a sixth season has been confirmed, where will the writers pick up the story?

We last saw Nina navigating single motherhood after the unexpected death of her partner Patrick and rediscovering the joys of life after months of grieving.

In my humble opinion, as a huge fan of the show, the sixth season needs to have some distance time-wise from the conclusion of season five.

Unlike A Place To Call Home, which was cut unnaturally short after just two seasons, Offspring's final episode was satisfying.

What would be interesting, and justify another season, is seeing Nina sending her daughter off to her first day of school, for example, and settling into a relationship with a new man.

These would be new challenges for her to tackle in the next chapter of her life.

Jumping several years into the future could also open up a raft of possibilities for the show's supporting characters including Nina's family and wacky work colleagues.

It's promising to see star Asher Keddie and her on-screen sibling Kat Stewart returning to the show (other returning cast have yet to be confirmed).

But on the other hand, creator Debra Oswald isn't coming back. Earlier this week she tweeted: "I'm happy with where we took the story by the end of #offspring 5, so I've chosen not to be part of S6. I hope fans enjoy the new series".

Producers Imogen Banks and John Edwards will continue to steer the ship. I hope they can ensure a smooth delivery.
