Beresford helps Aussies to baseball win

BASEBALL: Australia is close to its first appearance in the second round of the World Baseball Classic after trouncing China 11-0 in Tokyo.

The Aussies moved to 1-1 in Pool B and play Cuba (1-1) on Friday afternoon (AEST), with the winner advancing to the second round.

The highlight in the win was a grand slam by James Beresford in the eighth innings.

Luke Hughes also drove in four runs, and pitcher Travis Blackley was hot early.

Pool favourite Japan, which has already made the second round, had the day off and faces China on Friday.

Israel beat the Netherlands 4-2 to top Pool A with a 3-0 record.

The Netherlands (2-1) also advanced to the next round, which starts Saturday at Tokyo Dome, after beating Taiwan 6-5 on Wednesday.
