Businesses rally to fund brain research

IN JUNE 2016, Edward John Wheway, affectionately known as Ted, lost his battle with brain cancer.

Ted was diagnosed with a malignant tumour called glioblastoma in 2014 and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and medical trials before moving into palliative care.

His wife, Cathie Wheway, described her soul mate as a kind, clever and gentle man who loved inventing things.

Regulars at their local Coffee Club, Cathie and Ted got to know the staff well.

Morayfield Supa Centre Coffee Club store manager Donna Scott said Ted's passing was really sad for everyone.

"We've known them for a long time - they're beautiful people.

"Cathie mentioned that there's not a lot of support of research into brain cancer so I thought we could raise some money.”

She said what started out as a small fundraiser had snowballed in the best way.

"I've done a couple of fundraisers at the Coffee Club and the owners have been so supportive,” she said.

"I asked a few businesses if they'd like to donate so I could put together a small prize, and now I've got so much, including a fridge and washing machine from Radio Rentals.”

Raffle tickets will be available to purchase in the coming weeks, and all proceeds will go to brain cancer research.

Cathie hopes the profits from the raffle will one day mean no other family has to go through what hers has.
