TRIPS to cafes are on the rise, according to Roy Morgan Research.

Jamaica Blue Caneland Central owner Jocelyn Lopresti said she'd been surprised by the strength of Mackay's cafe culture since moving here late last year.

"There definitely is a trend towards more people catching up for a coffee," she said.

"It's all about an atmosphere and an experience.

"To come and be served; to have a coffee by a trained barista."

Ms Lopresti said a combination of people visited her cafe, including young mums, workers on their lunch breaks and business people having coffee meetings.

A recent Roy Morgan Research report revealed 55% of Aussies had dropped into a cafe within a three-month period, 6.6% more than in 2003.

More people were eating out, while the number of people dining at fast food outlets or ordering takeaway remained about the same.
