A COAST beauty has been selected as a finalist for the 2017 Australian Supermodel of the Year.

Caloundra's Sophie Kenny is among the 77 women from around the nation currently in the bid for the title.

After auditioning early last month, the 18-year-old found out via email on Wednesday that she had been selected as a finalist

Ms Kenny said her modelling career began when she was given a photography session as birthday gift.

"I wasn't sure at first because I'm quite shy but I eventually did it and it's been really good so far."

The next step for Ms Kenny will be to qualify in the top 20 entrants who are jetted off to Bali for two weeks to compete to be in the grand final and the ultimate winner.

"It doesn't really matter to me how I go, it's just about the experience," she said.

"This is definitely the biggest event I have taken part in so far.

"For now I'm just going to work on building up my social media points and gathering sponsors."
