5.15 PM: Properties are no longer under threat at The Caves as water bombing of a large grass fire at Camoo Caves Rd continues.

Multiple fire units are still fighting the blaze which is now encroaching on the national park area where the fire is inaccessible.

Backburning is taking pace on the southern flanks of the fire.

Residents in The Caves area and surrounds are advised to close windows and doors and keep medication on hand as a large smoke haze is affecting the area.

Motorists, including those travelling along the Bruce Highway, are reminded to slow down and drive to conditions as smoke may affect visibility on the road.

 

3:50 PM

FOURTEEN ground fire crews and water bombing aircraft are working to contain a large grass fire burning at The Caves, north of Rockhampton.

Firefighters are working to protect properties in the vicinity of Camoo Caves Road.

The fire broke out at around 1.30pm on Thursday afternoon. 

Residents in The Caves area and surrounds are advised to close windows and doors and keep medication on hand as a large smoke haze is affecting the area.

Motorists, including those travelling along the Bruce Highway, are reminded to slow down and drive to conditions as smoke may affect visibility on the road.

2.30pm: WATER bombing is about to be conducted at a large grass fire at The Caves.

A number of crews are on scene working to contain the blaze, which broke out about 1.30pm today.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is advising:

Residents should consider taking precautionary measures including:

  • Putting on protective clothing;
  • Drinking lots of water;
  • Moving car/s to a safe location;
  • Closing windows and doors and shutting blinds;
  • Bringing pets inside, restraining them (leash, cage or secure room) and providing water;
  • Wetting down fine fuels close to buildings;
  • Removing garden furniture, doormats and other items;
  • Sealing all gaps under doors and screens;
  • Filling containers with water - eg bath, sinks, buckets, wheelie bins;
  • Having ladders ready for roof space access (inside) and against roof (outside);
  • Having a generator or petrol powered pump ready; and
  • Checking and patrolling outside for embers, extinguishing any spot fires and seeking shelter as the fire front arrives.

Residents are advised to call Triple Zero (000) if they believe their property comes under threat.

UPDATE 1.50pm : QUEENSLAND Rural Fire Service reports indicate the bush fire is burning on Camoo Caves Rd, The Caves. 

Initial reports suggest there is no immediate threat to structures or homes at this time. 

BREAKING: QUEENSLAND Fire and Emergency Services are responding to reports of grass fire north of Rockhampton. 

Initial reports suggest the fire is off Rossmoya Rd near The Caves.
