HAVE YOU ever wanted to throw in the towel and just take off for a year and travel?

Most people have only dreamt about it, but Tammy Roche's family will live it when they pack up their life and travel Australia in a caravan.

A holiday style typically favoured by grey nomads, Tammy said that thanks to the power of social media her family have connected with other families that are choosing to live a more transient lifestyle.

"That's the beauty of technology. These are people that are on the road presently and they're happy to share - I ask a question and within five minutes I've got about 30 responses," she said.

Tammy and her husband Mark will take their two children - Zoe, 13, and Kolton, 4, on the road with them for the whole year to fulfil her husband's dream of travelling the country in a caravan.

Tammy said she was surprised by the amount of families with teens that are doing the same thing.

"There are your older families out there but there's a fair few travelling with teenagers as well. I didn't think that there would be many but there are actually quite a few," she said.

Research by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia shows that numbers of families caravanning familles is on the rise.

Caravan Industry Association of Australia CEO Stuart Lamont said statistics show that families are the next big market in caravan sales.

"The largest domestic user group in the sector is 30-54 year olds, making up 50 percent of the market," he said.

"In an independent study into caravanning and camping demographics completed in 2013 found the family demographic was the one most likely to grow into the future."

To prepare for their departure, the Roche family will hold an everything-must-go Garage Sale to prepare for their January 7 departure.

"It's pretty much the entire house that we are getting rid of. We're not selling bedroom suites, but everything else is going," Tammy said.

The garage sale will take place on October 31 at 152 Riflebird Dr, Upper Caboolture, from 7am.
