PAT Davern, lead guitarist of Grinspoon, knows a good yarn when he hears one. Even when it involves a pink and purple-spotted elephant named Alexander. And so a combined publishing and recording project was born.
Pat, owner of Bangalow Music & Books near Byron Bay, said: "I realised these stories needed to be shared so I took the characters, put pen to paper and got to writing the book and the music."
Alexander, who lives in Zanzibar in this wildly colourful children's book, is not a very big elephant, and he's not very brave - or so he thinks. His best friend Miss Alicia Peabody, the wonderfully moustachioed Clever Uncle Gerald and Pedro the Parrot help him find his courage thanks to his favourite treat, red-ant sandwiches. All ends happily, except for the bad loggers who were trying to cut down The Great Tree.
James Davern, whose stellar television career includes the creation of A Country Practice, said: "Pat asked if he could take the characters, write them into stories and set them to music. Of course, I was thrilled as now the next generation can enjoy Alexander as much as the previous one."
The sweet music on the CD includes such Australian musical luminaries as Pete Murray, Connie Mitchell from Sneaky Sound System, Megan Washington, Alex Lloyd, the rock band Kingswood and Channel 7's Tom Williams.
Pat Davern wrote and recorded the music, and features as the narrator. Author and artist Martin Chatteron, from Lennox Head, illustrated this charming picture book with a strikingly bold palette.
