Gold Coast man 'critical' after barbecue explosion

Chris Chan GLA141011MENT

A 42-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after a barbecue explosion on the Gold Coast on Sunday night.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man turned on the gas supply to his barbecue in suburban Highland Park about 10.25pm on Sunday night some minutes before he ignited it.

The flame then caused a gas explosion that caused severe burns to the man's face and legs.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before rushing him to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

He remains in a critical condition.
