Camaro ZL1 teases at Holden's possible future

HOLDEN is yet to confirm exactly what GM product will fill the V8 sportscar void when the Aussie-built Commodore is retired, but if it is to be a rebadged Chevrolet Camaro you'll want a little look at this.

Called Camaro ZL1, this 2017 model due for American release later this year has a supercharged 6.2-litre LT4 V8 good for an estimated 477kW and internal organ-crushing 868Nm of twist. They won't be producing any right-hand drive examples of this current generation Camaro, but if its successor does come as a right hooker, the future looks very bright for Aussie rear-drive performance fans.

Chevy says the ZL1 will challenge the most advanced sports coupes in the world with "unprecedented levels of technology, refinement, track capability and straight-line acceleration".

The Yanks can enjoy their 2017 2+2 coupe ZL1 with a six-speed manual gearbox or an all-new 10-speed - yep, 10 cog - paddle shift automatic. Magnetic ride suspension, electronic limited-slip differential and 390mm Brembo brakes behind 20-inch wheels should ensure the ZL1 is as driver-friendly as a tail-happy 477kW monster can be.

The looks are hardly what you'd call subtle, but Chevrolet assures us the angular and bulgingly muscular shape has been exhaustively wind-tunnel and track tested for excellent aerodynamics and cooling for track use, with the exterior elements managing airflow over, under and through the ZL1.

As long as GM has such products in its arsenal, Holden's future performance offerings have no excuse not to be very exciting indeed.
