Threatening police had him a tasered, now he is free

A MAN who was tasered after threatening police while armed with a broken beer bottle has been handed an 18-month probation order.

On July 18 last year police were looking for 32-year-old Shane Paul Taylor after being called to a disturbance at his home.

A patrol car noticed a man matching his description about 5.40pm near a service station on the corner of Walker and Boundary Sts.

Taylor was carrying a six pack of beer and when police approached he dropped all but one of the bottles and smashed it against a gas bottle.

Holding the broken bottle in his hand he yelled "stay back I'm f****** warning you" at the officers.

Police drew their firearms and taser and when Taylor threatened to self-harm police deployed the taser.

Describing being tasered like "being hit by a truck, if not worse" Taylor fell to the ground. He hit a guard rail and received a significant cut to his head.

Defence lawyer Thomas Bray said Taylor had been in a "bad state mentally" and had apologised to police while at the police station after the incident.

He said Taylor was now getting his life back on track.

In the Bundaberg Magistrates Court yesterday Taylor pleaded guilty to one count of serious assault of police while armed and one count of obstructing police.

Magistrate Aaron Simpson said any offence against a police officer was serious but threatening police was viewed differently to actually spitting or striking an officer.
