Mayor’s call on school security cameras receives support

THE disappearance and death of Tiahleigh Palmer has raised the issue of security cameras at all schools.

Two weeks ago the 12 year old was dropped off at Marsden State High School, but she never made it into school and never made it home.

Her decomposing body was discovered by fisherman on the banks of the Pimpama River six days later.

Police and SES have been conducting a detailed search in the vicinity of the school.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the investigation would not have been so heavily reliant on footage recorded by the public if the school had been fitted with security cameras.

He has called for CCTV cameras to be installed across all schools in Queensland.

Bravehearts CEO Hetty Johnston has now echoed this appeal.

"The death of Tiahleigh is a tragedy and has deeply affected communities across the state," she said.

"We have a responsibility to ensure our children are protected as far as possible.

"The installation of security cameras at schools is a measure we can and must take."

Education Minister Kate Jones said funding for schools to install security cameras was available.

Police renewed their appeal for the public to hand over any dashcam footage they may have recorded on October 30 along Muchow and Chambers Flat roads. Tiahleigh's school uniform and pink backpack were still missing as of late yesterday.
