A QUEENSLAND man has had both legs amputated and could lose as many as six fingers after he was diagnosed with the potentially deadly meningococcal disease.
Kurt Power, 24, was admitted to Townsville Hospital on January 31 with what he believed to be severe gastro.
But after undergoing surgery he was placed into an induced coma and it was discovered that he had contracted the bacterial disease.
Mr Power's girlfriend Victoria Howard, 19 - who is due to give birth on August 26 - has been by his side since he was admitted to hospital.
"No one really knew what was wrong with him to start with," she said. "Then the next morning they did a blood test and it was meningococcal."
