Mob and court justice combine for powerful punishment

MOB justice has combined with court justice to punish a man who bashed his girlfriend.

The 46-year-old man received a prison sentence to go with a fractured skull he received after members of the public took offence to seeing him hit his partner in a pub in Maryborough.

Duty lawyer Travis George said the man had to be taken to hospital in an ambulance after the incident, which occurred in the Central Hotel on November 8.

After he punched and kicked the woman in the pub other patrons set upon the man and bashed him, the court heard.

"Physical violence against a woman is condemned by the court and the community," Magistrate John Smith said.

"You can see that in how the patrons of the hotel reacted," he added.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kath Stagoll said there had been two recent incidents of violence from the man towards his partner.

The other occurred on September 28, and the man pleaded guilty to a contravention of a domestic violence order for both incidents.

Alcohol was said to be a factor in both incidents.

Mr George said the man was an alcoholic, and that he suffered from other mental health issues along with physical pain from a degenerative back injury.

Mr Smith sentenced the man to four months' imprisonment for the November bashing.

This was suspended immediately, with Mr Smith warning him any further offence could result in the time having to be served.

Mr Smith also ordered a $1500 fine for the September incident.
