PEUGEOT is up for a price fight with its new 208 range, coming to market later this month with a tag of $15,990 for its entry-level Access model.

The outgoing 208 compact hatch line-up started at $18,490 for the 1.2 Active manual earlier in 2015, and of late the cheapest has been the 1.6 Active in auto guise for $19,990 drive away.

The latest models receive new drivetrains, new transmissions or new on-board technology, with the headline being the 60kW 208 Access's price point, something Peugeot claims to be the most accessible ever for a Peugeot in the marque's 80-year Australian history.

And it needs to be. The compact hatch market - so popular with first-car buyers - has been a price-gouging battleground of late, with class-leading Mazda2, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent, Honda Jazz and VW Polo, all at similar bargain prices.

Buyers after the 208 Access with automatic transmission will need to find $18,990, but this model comes with a more powerful 81kW turbocharged version of the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.

Overall there are five 208 model variants using three different engines. Step up from the Access and $21,990 secures the mid-range Active with auto box, a 7-inch touchscreen, rear parking sonar, cruise control and 16-inch alloys as standard.

The $25,990 Allure adds dual zone climate, sat nav, self-parking tech, front parking sensors and chrome pack amongst its inclusions, and a new GT-Line model ($27,990) brings 17-inch alloys, GT-Line interior and exterior touches and sports bucket seats to name a few.

The hot GTi version - a three-door with only 6-speed manual transmission (good) - will be priced at $30,990. Here you get the 153kW/300Nm 1.2-litre turbo engine, unique body styling and a whole heap of fun.
