WOULD you send $250,000 in the mail from Taigum to Toowoomba - a distance of more than 100km? That's what one family unknowingly did when they tucked a $10 Instant Scratch-Its ticket into a birthday card and posted it.
The travelling Instant Scratch-Its ticket turned out to be the present of a lifetime after the birthday boy scratched it and found he had won the top prize of $250,000.
Faced with the choice of whether to tell his family the truth about what the Instant Scratch-Its winning ticket was worth, the Toowoomba winner said he never hesitated.
"My family made a pact 30 years ago that given we buy each other scratchies for every birthday if we ever won a substantial prize we'd split it," he said.
"So there was never any question in my mind that this was our win to share. As soon as I scratched $250,000 I was on the phone right away to tell them.
"I couldn't believe we'd won and was so grateful that the ticket arrived safely."
The female family member who bought the ticket admitted it was a close call.
"I almost didn't buy the scratchie that day," she said.
"If I had been more organised with buying his birthday gift I probably wouldn't have been there to buy the winning one.
"I would have bought a different one weeks ago."
The happy family, who wishes to remain anonymous, plans to upgrade their cars and complete some renovations around the house, among many other things.
The top-prize winning $10 Instant Scratch-Its ticket was bought from Taigum Lotto and Cignell at 320 Rogham Rd in Taigum.
