TWO roaming dogs have mauled all the pets belonging to a Gympie family overnight, prompting a warning from council to keep dogs properly contained.
The dogs killed the family's cat, guinea pigs and chicken.
The owners of the slain pets said the dogs' owner has come forward in an attempt to make amends, and the matter is being handled privately.
A Gympie Regional Council spokeswoman said all dog owners were required to keep their pets contained on their property under the Animal Management Act.
The spokeswoman said owners face serious consequences if their dogs attack pets or humans, and the animal could be destroyed.
"Once all the facts have been established, action may be taken against the dog owner ranging from informal advice at the lower end of the scale to court summons and prosecution for a serious dog attack," she said.
She said council was aware of the incident, but there was no legal obligation for victims to report attacks and incidents often go unreported.
