MALENY volunteers Margaret McKenzie and Julia Peddie hope to ease housing affordability pressures one home at a time.

Their Compassionate Housing Affordability Solutions Maleny (CHASM) group want to build a small, portable, rental home on a vacant section of land behind the Maple St Co-op store.

While the plan is only in its early stages, Ms McKenzie hopes it will encourage other landholders to do the same.

"People are being priced out of the market here,” Ms McKenzie said.

"It is an affluent town but there are people who have been left behind.”

She hoped owners of larger blocks of land would consider building smaller, second dwellings that could be rented at a reasonable rate.

Sunshine Coast Council's planning scheme allows secondary dwellings of up to 90sqm floor space in rural or rural residential zones.

Her group has applied for grant funding but also need to fundraise to get the money to build the house.

Maple St Co-op board member Sammy Ringer supported the plan to build in the store's rear garden.

"It fits in with our co-operative nature,” Ms Ringer said.
