AN INNOVATIVE upright tyre trailer has been designed and put to work in Western Australia.

"These trailers now allow us to transport some of the largest heavy mobile equipment tyres as part of a triple road train configuration," Centurion's CEO Justin Cardaci said.

"They will significantly improve our efficiency and boost our productivity.

"We transported more than 2600 heavy equipment tyres to various mine sites across Western Australia last year so the development of these new trailers is an important innovation for our business," he said when announcing the addition of the new tyre trailers to the Perth-based Centurion transport and logistics fleet.

The tyre trailers evolved from a 12month design, development and initial manufacture process and provide a more reliable, cheaper and safer solution for transporting tyres.

They will also improve safety, something Centurion is continually looking to do with the company's key health and safety message of "Think Safe Act Safe" clearly reflecting that approach.

The Western Australian designed trailers allow for tyres to be loaded and transported vertically, which instantly reduces the traditional "oversize" width of such loadings and removes the need for an "oversize" permit and the need for a pilot vehicle.

Centurion's trucks, which can now be set up to carry these large tyres in a triple road train configuration, can now transport twice as many tyres in a single trip.

This significantly reduces the cost of transporting large tyres and reduces the number of vehicles and drivers required for the task.

The tyres are locked into place by a hand-held remote control unit which allows the operator to always be at a safe distance from each trailer during the loading or unloading process.

"The automation of tyre loading and unloading and the reduction in manual restraining minimises the risk of injury and makes the whole process of transferring tyres to mine sites a lot safer," Mr Cardaci said.

Previously, large dump truck or haul truck tyres could only be transported horizontally in Western Australia on a flat top or drop deck trailer and only in a single truck and trailer configuration.

As the price of iron ore firms on the world market, wheels are turning once again in Western Australia's mines and when wheels turn they wear out.

This guarantees ongoing sales for tyre manufacturers and for fleets like Centurion who are on the cutting edge of long haul technology, these trailers will be making dust for a long time to come.
