Woman attacked by man with axe at Melbourne shopping centre

A WOMAN has been attacked with an axe during a violent confrontation at Westfield Fountain Gate.

Police have arrested a man following the attack inside a business at the Narre Warren shopping centre, just after 10am.

The woman, believed to be in her 30s, has been taken to The Alfred hospital with injuries to her upper body.

Ambulance Victoria says she is in a serious but stable condition.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said the exact cause of the incident is being investigated.

"It is believed parties are known to each other," she said in a statement.

A section of the shopping centre, near General Pants Co, has been closed to members of the public according to reports on social media.
