A CAIRNS woman has been charged over allegedly trying to extort money from controversial Queensland MP Billy Gordon.

Mr Gordon hit headlines earlier this year after he was embroiled in domestic violence allegations against former partners.

The allegations saw him quit the Labor Party to become an Independent.

Police have since concluded there was insufficient evidence to charge him.

The latest scandal allegedly involves a text message Mr Gordon sent the woman, 52, of his genitals in a series of exchanges between the two over the past few weeks.

She allegedly tried to blackmail the MP over the explicit photo before he reported the matter to police.

The woman has been charged with extortion and will appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on October 9.
