Woman and child dead and two critical in Hume Hwy horror

A WOMAN and child are dead, while a second woman and child are in a critical condition following a crash on the Hume Highway at Wilton, south of Sydney.

A 49-year-old woman driving a Mazda 4WD died at the scene. A seven-year-old boy and a seven year-old girl also in the Mazda were trapped for a short time.

The seven-year-old boy died on arrival at Liverpool Hospital while the seven-year-old girl is in a critical condition at the Children's Hospital, Westmead.

A 49-year-old woman, driving a Holden Astra, was trapped for some time before she was released. She was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Liverpool Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

The next of kin of all parties have been notified.

The Hume Highway southbound is closed. Crash Investigation officers are on scene.
